What Phospholipids Are

The Cognitive Health Connection

Brain tissue has the highest phospholipid concentration of any organ. As dogs age, membrane phospholipid composition changes — specifically, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine content decline, correlating with reduced membrane fluidity and impaired neurotransmitter function.

The evidence in dogs:

  • Phosphatidylserine supplementation has been studied in aging dogs with signs of cognitive decline. Published studies show modest improvements in cognitive task performance (spatial memory, attention) in supplemented dogs versus controls. The effect size is small but consistent.
  • Phospholipid-bound omega-3 fatty acids (as found in krill oil) show better brain tissue incorporation than triglyceride-bound omega-3s in some studies. The phospholipid carrier may improve blood-brain barrier transit.

What remains uncertain:

  • Whether phospholipid supplementation can prevent cognitive decline (versus modestly slowing it once underway)
  • Optimal dosing for different dog sizes
  • Whether whole phospholipid supplements are superior to individual components (choline + omega-3 separately)

Liver Support

Phosphatidylcholine has a specific role in liver health. The liver uses PC to produce bile and to export very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). When PC availability is insufficient, fat accumulates in the liver (hepatic lipidosis).

  • In rodent models, PC supplementation has shown hepatoprotective effects against alcohol, toxins, and high-fat diets
  • The active choline component supports methionine metabolism and reduces homocysteine levels
  • Clinical application in dogs with liver disease is plausible but not well-studied. SAMe and milk thistle have stronger veterinary evidence for liver support.

Forms and Bioavailability

  • Soy lecithin: the most common and least expensive phospholipid source. Contains PC, PE, and PI. Allergenicity is low in dogs (soy protein is the allergen, not soy lecithin).
  • Sunflower lecithin: similar phospholipid profile to soy, without the soy allergen concern
  • Krill oil: phospholipid-bound omega-3s (EPA/DHA). More expensive but may offer better bioavailability for brain tissue uptake.
  • Egg yolk phospholipids: rich in PC and PS. Available as supplements but also obtained through dietary egg yolk.

Dosing

No standardized veterinary dosing exists for phospholipid supplementation. Published cognitive health studies have used:

  • Phosphatidylserine: 50-200 mg/day depending on dog size
  • Phosphatidylcholine: 100-500 mg/day depending on dog size
  • Krill oil (for phospholipid-bound omega-3s): 500-1,000 mg/day for medium to large dogs

Safety

Phospholipids have excellent safety profiles. They are normal dietary components with no documented toxicity at supplemental doses. GI upset (soft stool) can occur at high doses, particularly with lecithin-based products.

Practical Recommendations

Phospholipid supplementation is most warranted for:

  • Senior dogs showing early cognitive changes — as an adjunct to other cognitive support strategies (enrichment, exercise, omega-3s)
  • Dogs with liver disease — as part of a broader hepatoprotective protocol alongside SAMe and veterinary management
  • Dogs where omega-3 bioavailability is a concern — krill oil provides omega-3s in phospholipid form

For most healthy adult dogs on balanced diets, specific phospholipid supplementation is unlikely to provide measurable benefits.

Starting before overt cognitive dysfunction appears may be more beneficial than waiting for symptoms, though this has not been definitively proven in clinical trials.

Can I get phospholipids from food instead of supplements?
